Great article and spot on assessment of the failures of our Governments. I too was hopeful to be on a, international flight in the first half of this year, now not so sure.

I hope you have the chance, Christine. I suppose it would be wise to let Omicron settle down, though, just in terms of changing border rules. Fingers crossed.

I like this return we are seeing, to believing in experts. Travel advisors, scientists... xx

I so agree with you, Jill. The era of the amateur is hopefully dead. Although there are a lot of amateur epidemiologists out there still!

Daughter aged 21 planning first (solo) trip overseas since she was 6 years old. Multi destinations make me nervous if she contracts Covid and has to hole up somewhere etc etc - relying on the kindness of family friends, or at some places, no one at all. She has chronic medical condition. Insurance for travel may be an issue. Any tips aside from the excellent info in the article?

I understand why you're concerned. I would really try to convince her to go to places where there are friends she can depend upon. Or places that are close to those friends. I chose Paris for my first foray because I had plenty of friends there who would bring me soup if I were confined to a hotel room. Also, stick to destinations with good health systems, especially if they have reciprocal medical coverage with Australia (Italy, UK, Sweden, Ireland etc.) Make sure she has her booster. (I know you know about good PPE.) Apart from that, she's now as likely to get it in Australia, so I guess it's really hard to tell a 21 year old not to live her life. I feel so sorry for the young ones - and the very elderly, with so few good travelling years left. Here are the 11 countries we have agreements with: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/about-reciprocal-health-care-agreements?context=22481

Thanks for the article. I don’t think everyone in the UK realises how lucky we are to have free lateral flow tests (RAT) we ask for a box and it arrives the next day

Thank you so much. Very thoughtful article. I have my heart set on seeing my sister in San Francisco and a surprise fiftieth wedding anniversary in Minnesota in June and thoughts don’t get much past que sera, sera.

A really helpful list and attitude to match. We are all in this boiling pot and can't wait for it all to be done. Surely there is a future for travelers both domestic and international. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Glad it was helpful, Richie. It's possible to travel internationally, it just needs some patience and luck.

Lee, as always, enjoying your articles, observations and opinions about travel and life in general. My wife and I have booked a trip to South America / Antarctica this coming October / November to celebrate a significant birthday. Probably spend the next 8 - 9 months with mild anxiety about possible problems. Better that than locking ourselves away; too afraid to enjoy life. We will both be 70. We have a helpful travel agent to keep us informed. Cheers, Allan

I agree, Allan. We have to be sensible, but not fearful. And hooray for that travel agent!

Spain currently has many less cases than NSW, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Well, I'm not SURE, but hopeful for you.
