How sad that Tim Soutphommasane feels Sydney's mentality was returning to the claustrophobia of the 1950s. This is what the pandamic has done to us. A plan to once more become that globally engaged country is what we need. Please!

We absolutely want and need tourists to return, both from a social and economic perspective. The Big Island mentality, and reality, is not good for the economy, or our commitment and love for diversity, not to mention the delight most of us have in meeting fellow global citizens on the back of a dive boat or cycling around a regional winery. Open the borders and keep them open, I want to see our cafes, streets, rural regions and CBDs buzzing with people again. The sooner the better.

Curious why we are being urged at every opportunity to get boosted (I am) but there is no requirement for inbound tourists to do so? Clearly not a decision based on medical advice but that seems to be the way we roll these days.

Christine, I guess it's because we are encouraged to get boosted but it's not required - perhaps they feel for this reason we can't ask it of overseas arrivals?

Every American I know was glad you "expelled " that famous tennis player. Even those who are big tennis fans. I have never heard the term "Australians are crazy"? On the contrary, most Americans feel a comradary with Australia as another country founded by, mostly European, pioneers. You guys will do fine and the tourists will love you and your country. The real worry is that some new variant doesn't make all this talk moot!

I'm worried about a new variant too, Vered, but it's not often discussed now. I guess people want some optimism.

Fine, but they should have the booster in order to enter Australia. Double vaccinated could have been a year ago. Good point re the effect on hospitals. Marilyn

Australia has really slowed down its uptake of boosters. I think so many people got Omicron, they mistakenly think it's added another layer of immunity.
